A recent study examining children in Turkey indicated that children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who achieve optimal outcome by moving off the autism spectrum develop related psychiatric conditions.

Such conditions include obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety and depression.

The study’s lead investigator, Nahit Motavalli Mukaddes, suggested that the majority of children with a past history of autism would be susceptible to developing psychiatric disorders.

While the results of the study has yet to be replicated in a different culture using a different sample, the study nonetheless points to a potential area of concern that parents may wish to address by following up with continued care and check-ups for psychiatric conditions and mental well-being.

Another area of potential concern pointed out by commenters to the article is that the process of recovery from ASD could be causing the development of these psychiatric disorders in the first place.

This could be the case where improper and ineffective treatment programs are used or in cases where brutal adult authority leads to behavioural repression in children with ASD.

This is why parents should look for an effective and proven treatment method when looking to help their child improve from their children.

Such an example would be applied behaviour analysis (ABA) therapy carried out by qualified, trained and experienced behaviour therapists who aim not to repress repetitious and/or anti-social behaviour in children with ASD but rather aim to direct, motivate and facilitate them to more socially acceptable and meaningful activities and behaviour.
